Names tend to follow cycles of popularity, shifting over years, decades, or even generations. Currently, names like Noah, Liam, and Oliver for boys to Olivia, Amelia, and Emma for girls, dominate the baby name charts. However, trends evolve quickly, and next year’s favorites could be entirely different. Just as today’s top names rise and fall, once-beloved Boomer names have gradually drifted out of favor.
The Boomer generation (those born between 1946 and 1964) was once the largest generation, now replaced by Millenials. As Boomers age, their most common names are becoming increasingly obsolete. It’s often easy to determine someone is a Baby Boomer based solely on their name. We’ve compiled a list of 50 common names from the Boomer generation that are rarely heard today.
How We Determined the List
To determine the once-popular Boomer names that are rarely heard today, we reviewed data on names from the U.S. Social Security Administration. Names were ranked based on the decline in the average number of newborns receiving each name over the period 1946 through 1964 to the period 2010 through 2023. Only names that were given to fewer than one in every 10,000 newborns over the period 2010 through 2023 were considered.
