Military uniforms are one of the ways to distinguish different rankings and branches of the U.S. Armed Forces. While many Americans may be able to generally identify a military uniform when they see one, most Americans couldn’t tell you what branch of the military each uniform represents.
The United States Military consists of six branches. While some of the branches share a uniform, there are many military uniforms that are unique to a specific branch of the military. If you think you’re knowledgeable about what most branches of the military wear, keep reading to find out about the U.S. military uniforms most Americans can’t identify.
U.S. Army Combat Uniform
The U.S. Army Uniform is one of the most common uniforms that you might see. However, there are many people who don’t know the difference between this uniform and the uniform for other military branches. This uniform, known within certain branches as the OCP (operational camouflage pattern) is the same combat uniform used by the U.S. Air Force, Space Force, and Coast Guard.
U.S. Marine Corps Combat Uniform
The combat uniform for the U.S. Marine Corps is similar to the combat uniform for the U.S. Army, Air Force, and Space Force, but with a different camouflage pattern. For the Marine Corps, there are two different variants of the combat uniform.
U.S. Navy Combat Uniform
The U.S. Navy Combat Uniform is another pattern of camouflage different from the U.S. Army and Marine Corps Combat Uniform. There are two patterns of the U.S. Navy Combat Uniform currently in use. One of the patterns is tan in color and the other is green.
U.S. Marine Corps Dress Uniform
The U.S. Marine Corps Dress Uniform is specifically used for formal occasions. The iconic dress blues of the U.S. Marine Corps can be identified by the blue jacket and red trim along the side. The U.S. Marine Corps Dress Uniform is the only uniform in the Armed Forces that includes red, white, and blue.
U.S. Army Blue Service Uniform
Another one of the uniforms U.S. Army personnel wear is the Army Blue Service Uniform. This uniform has a blue coat and is worn with blue slacks or a blue skirt. The Army Blue Service Uniform is a formal uniform worn by soldiers in the U.S. Army.
U.S. Army Green Service Uniform
In addition to the combat uniform and dress uniform, U.S. Army personnel also have the Army Green Uniform, which is for everyday wear. This olive green uniform is worn in place of business attire. A new Army Green Service Uniform was first announced in 2018 and was meant to reflect the uniforms worn by soldiers in World War II.
U.S. Navy Working Uniform
While members of the U.S. Navy can usually be identified by their dress uniforms, they also have a working uniform to wear during operations. The Type III Navy Working Uniform is currently the one worn by most sailors, while the Type II Uniform is worn mostly by Navy SEALs.
U.S. Coast Guard White Dress Uniform
The U.S. Coast Guard personnel have two different dress uniforms that they wear specifically during formal or ceremonial events. One of the dress uniforms is the U.S. Coast Guard White Dress Uniform, which they wear with a black bow tie. However, the white dress uniform is not as common as the dress blues worn by the U.S. Coast Guard.
