Of course, you should start with the essentials: food, bowls, a bed, and a crate. These are the items you absolutely need to have before you bring your dog home. Make sure to pick the right kind of food for your dog. Do your research and avoid brands that don't have a vet recommendation. Popular dog food brands include Pedigree, Purina Pro Plan, and Blue Buffalo. If you want to feed your dog a raw diet, talk to a vet about how to do that properly.

Toys are another must-have, especially for a young dog. Keep in mind that some toys are not suited for all dogs. Dogs who are big chewers need toys that can withstand the power of their jaws.
