Reminders For When You Get A New Dog
There are so many things you need to do when you get a new dog. From buying supplies to actually bringing them home, all of these tasks can make your head spin! You want to be sure you have everything in order, but sometimes we just forget about something we need to do.
One of the more important things you need to do before bringing your new family member home is pet-proof your home. Make sure any toxic items are put well out of reach. Dogs often don't know any better; the last thing you want is them ingesting something they shouldn't. Keep the animal poison control line, (888) 426-4435, on hand in case you ever need it. We recommend hanging it on the fridge so anyone in your family can find it quickly.
You should also set up a new patient appointment with a vet. This appointment will generally be a physical or a partial physical. It is intended to get your dog acquainted with a doctor. If necessary, you may need to get your dog certain vaccinations at this appointment. Talk to your veterinarian about what they recommend.
Make sure everyone in your family is up-to-date on rules regarding the dog. This is especially important with young children, who may pull on a dog's ears or tail because they don't know any better. Make sure everyone understands that every dog needs space at times. There should be a place, such as a dog bed or a crate, where your dog can go when it wants to be left alone. Remember to never startle a sleeping dog, as even friendly dogs can react poorly if startled.
