Other Great Cakes to Try

Once you've tried out this incredible dirt cake recipe, give these other fantastic cakes a go:

  • Swiss roll. No, not the snack cake kind you get in the store. A homemade swiss roll is a chocolate cake rolled around a cream filling. It can be coated with chocolate, or left as-is. Your kids will love this one!
  • Strawberry shortcake. A common favorite among children for its sweetness, strawberry shortcake is a great summertime treat. Use fresh strawberries to make this dessert, and serve it up at your next summer gathering.
  • Snowball cakes. We're still not talking about the snack cakes. Snowball cakes can be made at home. They're small chocolate cakes shaped as half-spheres, with a cream filling and marshmallow coating. Cover the marshmallow with coconut shavings.
  • Ruske kape. A dessert with alternating layers of chocolate and vanilla cake, topped with chocolate frosting and coconut shavings on the sides. For the chocolate and coconut lovers in your life, this dessert is a must-bake.
  • Chocolate lava cake. This is an entertaining one to make for kids! This is a small chocolate cake with a molten chocolate center. When the cake is cut, the fudgy center will pour out, just like lava! Dust with powdered sugar and serve warm.
  • Gingerbread cake. Your family has more than likely tried gingerbread cookies, but what about gingerbread cake? Gingerbread cake has the same spice that you know and love, just in cake form instead of cookie form. This is a great dessert to serve at a holiday gathering!
  • Depression cake. With groceries as expensive as they are, why not try a depression cake? Depression cakes don't have any milk, sugar, butter, or eggs. This recipe came about at a time when these goods were unavailable or too expensive for the average family. Try your hand at it and see how it goes!
  • Cookie cake. This one might be cheating, but if you haven't tried making a cookie cake yet, you need to. Cookie cakes are great alternatives to traditional cakes. If you're bored with regular cake, or if you need to make a dessert for a cookie lover, this is a great choice.
