How to Store Soup

If you've made more soup than you and your family can eat at once, you'll need to store it! Storing soup correctly will ensure it stays delicious and safe for your family to eat for as long as possible. There are two ways that you can store soup: in the fridge or in the freezer.

If you choose to store your chicken noodle soup in the fridge, it will last for about three to five days. Make sure you store it in a tightly-sealed container. If you don't have any containers to store it in, a Ziploc bag can also work. Just be sure the bag is tightly sealed! If it isn't, your soup won't stay fresh. In addition, if the bag tips over you'll have a mess in your fridge.

When frozen, chicken noodle soup can last for up to three months. Make sure your freezer is set to zero degrees Fahrenheit; that is the ideal temperature for freezing soup, according to the USDA. Don't add pasta to the soup you intend to freeze; upon thawing, your pasta will become mushy. Add the pasta as you reheat each batch of chicken noodle soup. Always defrost soup by putting it in the fridge or in the microwave; never just leave it on the counter.

Before reheating your soup, check it. If it has an off odor, abnormal coloring, or otherwise looks off, discard it. If it looks and smells okay, boil it on the stove or in the microwave for at least three minutes. This will ensure any bacteria is killed off. Once the soup is done reheating, give it a taste. If it tastes off, discard it. Otherwise, serve and enjoy!
