You’re Going to Love This Whipped Potatoes and Ham Recipe

Ham and potatoes may seem like a pretty basic meal, but this is a dish that takes it to the next level. The ingredients are combined to make a casserole-like dish that works perfectly with the other ingredients. If you've never thought of combining potatoes and ham into the same dish, you're about to have your mind blown.

This dish generally works better as a side rather than a main course, but it could work as a main dish for a light dinner. If you'll be serving this as the main star of the show, we recommend making a side or two to go with it. That will provide your family with enough sustenance to keep them from wanting snacks an hour later.

Potatoes and ham are both easy to find in most grocery stores, so you should be able to easily acquire what you need for this recipe without much difficulty. It also won't cost you a fortune, which is important in today's world. Many families have a hard time affording groceries, so finding affordable recipes is important.

Read on to find out more about how you can make it for your family. For more fantastic recipes just like this one, take a look at the other recipes we have on our site. Many of them are just as wonderful as this one here.

Easy Whipped Potatoes

There are many elements of this dish that add to its deliciousness, but the whipped potatoes may just be the star of the show. Some people confuse whipped potatoes and mashed potatoes, but the difference is in the preparation. Mashed potatoes are mashed with a special tool until smooth. Milk or butter is usually added to make a creamy texture.

Whipped potatoes are beaten with a mixer or blender until they are smooth. This gives them a fluffy, airy texture which differs from mashed potatoes that usually have a heavier consistency. The whipped potatoes in this recipe are made by peeling 6 medium sized potatoes. They are then cut into chunks and place in a saucepan.

Add 2” of water to cover the potatoes and cook over low heat for 20 minutes. Mix potatoes with an electric mixer, adding water to keep them from becoming stiff. Mix in ¼ tsp. garlic salt and spoon into pan. Once you have made the whipped potatoes, the rest of the recipe comes easily.

Spread 2 to 4 cooked ham chunks over the potatoes. Then, whip 1 cup heavy cream until it’s light and fluffy. Fold 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese into the whipped cream. Spoon the mixture over the ham and bake at 350 for 20-30 minutes. Allow to stand for ten minutes before serving so potatoes can firm up.

The result is a creamy, gooey concoction that is absolutely delectable. The cream works with the potatoes to give the dish a light, fluffy taste that practically melts in your mouth. The ham adds a savory, salty element that complements the dish perfectly, assuring a little bit of heaven in every mouthful.

Ham Side Dishes for Thanksgiving

Because this dish is more like potatoes with ham added, it will work better as a side as opposed to being the main part of the meal. This makes it the perfect thing to serve at holidays like Thanksgiving or Christmas.

Though ham can be the star of the meal, during these times of the year, it will have to take second place to turkey. However, it would be remiss to omit ham from the meal entirely. Therefore, you will want to think of creative ways you can incorporate it into your side dishes.

When it comes to making sides that include ham, here is another idea to play around with.

Parmesan Potato Ham Bake: To make this recipe, start by combining ½ cup milk and 1/3 cup grated Parmesan cheese in a small bowl. Set aside. Take 4 medium potatoes and slice them very thin. Place 1/3 of the potatoes on the bottom of a greased baking pan. Drizzle with 1/3 of the milk mixture and top 3/8 cup of diced cooked ham. Repeat layers until ingredients are used up and sprinkle the top with parmesan cheese.

Dot with butter and bake for 30 minutes.

Ham is a festive meat that brings a savory, salty taste to any table. These are just some ideas for how you can include it in your holiday meal. How will you be using ham to make your side dishes shine?
