You don’t need to go out to a steakhouse to have a delicious steak dinner. This recipe makes an amazing steak that makes any night special. Whether you’re serving company or choosing to have a date night at home after the kids go to bed, this recipe is perfect for when you want something fancier.
There are a few secrets to making a great steak at home. It’s easier than you think it would be, so there’s really no reason to pay the big bucks to go to a steakhouse.
Brandy Peppercorn Sauce
The first key to making a delicious steak dinner at home is to start with a good cut of meat. Once you select an excellent cut of meat, you’ll want to cook it over medium-high heat. The goal is to cook it hot and quickly. If you cook it longer, you’ll get a tougher steak and nobody wants that!
You’ll want to season the steak with the peppercorns and cook it separately. Part of making a great steak is letting it rest for a few minutes after it cooks. While the steak is resting, you can whip up the sauce in a small saucepan.
The second key to making a great steak at home is to have a delicious sauce to season it well. This recipe here calls for Worcestershire sauce, which is a good base for flavoring a steak. But if you want to make it really have that savory steakhouse taste, add a quarter cup of brandy. It will play off the peppercorns to make a flavorful steak.
The butter also tenderizes the steak and adds a creamy richness to the dish. The flavors of the butter, brandy, thyme, and peppercorns come together to make a main dish that easily rivals that of any restaurant. No boring, bland steaks here.
Whiskey Peppercorn Sauce
Another variation for this recipe is to add a quarter cup of whiskey to the sauce. As the sauce cooks, most of the alcohol will burn off and leave behind the flavor. A savory sauce really compliments the delicious heartiness of the steak.
You don't need to worry about serving a meal with an alcohol-based sauce to children. Since the alcohol burns off during cooking, there's no risk. Your children will be able to enjoy this delicious variation on peppercorn steak without worry on your part.
That being said, it's probably best to leave them out of the cooking process. The last thing you need is someone taking a sip of the whiskey when you're not paying attention! There are plenty of other recipes that you can include your kids in.
So, will you be using this peppercorn whiskey sauce on your steak? It's a great way to elevate this recipe without putting in much extra work. Pick a good whiskey with flavors that complement steak nicely. Pour a glass to have with dinner- for the adults, of course.
Sides For This Dinner
Even though the steak itself is the star of this dinner, it’s still important to have some tasty side dishes. You can make fresh steak fries by chopping up potatoes into one-inch-thick strips and baking them at 400 degrees or frying them in an air fryer.
The classic steakhouse side for a steak is a baked potato with all the fixings. Luckily, this is easy enough to make at home. Throw a few potatoes wrapped in foil into the oven and bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes or so. The toppings on hand should include butter, sour cream, bacon bits, sliced green onions, and shredded cheddar cheese.
A side salad is also traditionally part of steak dinner at any fancy restaurant. You can do a standard garden salad and even get a pre-bagged salad mix at the grocery store. But if you want to put more effort into dinner, it’s not hard to make a delicious salad. Just buy a couple heads of romaine or some pre-made spring mix and slice up some favorite vegetables like carrots or cucumbers.
Every family needs its everyday meals that are affordable and easy to get on the table. This one is a bit fancier, but still won’t have you spending hours in the kitchen. But the taste will leave you feeling like dinner is a special occasion.
