Filet Mignon, caviar, artisan cheeses, Kitty Litter Cake…. wait, let’s back up a minute. Kitty Litter Cake? Since when did that become appetizing?
Well, while Kitty Litter Cake may seem like something no adult would ever want to eat, it can be a hit at children’s parties and is a terrific Halloween treat. It can also be a great prank for office parties. It can even be quite delicious for adults who are not too squeamish about what they are eating!
Kitty Litter Cake is just what it sounds like; cake that is made to look like kitty litter. It can be made using a wide variety of ingredients as long as it looks as gross as it sounds! If it gets people to make faces and proclaim how gross it looks, you know you've done it right!
Of course, this cake is still delicious. It wouldn't be a good dessert if it tasted as bad as it looks! Once your guests dive in, they'll quickly forget about first appearances. You might even hear some surprised proclamations at how good this tastes! Kids especially will get a good giggle out of its appearance, and then a satisfying dessert out of its taste.
How to Make Kitty Litter Cake
Common recipes will start with a combination of white and chocolate cake. Green food coloring is added to resemble the chlorophyll in the litter box and chocolate Tootsie Roll pops are melted and manipulated in such a way so that they resemble, well, cat poop.
Of course, for the added element of authenticity, it is key to serve the cake in a kitty litter box placed on newspaper with an actual pooper scooper included, preferably a new one! Be sure to scatter some crumbs and um, Tootsie Roll pops around for some added flair.
Kitty Litter Cake is a lot of fun to prepare and serve. It can make holidays and parties even more exciting and it really is yummy, if you can convince your guests to eat it. Just one word to the wise… keep it away from the cat!
If you're serving this at a party, it may be a good idea to set aside an alternative dessert for anyone who can't stomach the idea of eating Kitty Litter Cake. While most guests will be able to get past the thought once they try the actual cake, some of your more squeamish guests may not be so capable. Bake some normal cupcakes, or a regular frosted cake, for guests to have instead if they wish.
Ingredients:
1 18-ounce box spice or German chocolate cake mix
1 18-ounce box white cake mix
1 package white sandwich cookies
1 large box vanilla instant pudding mix
12 small tootsie rolls
1 NEW litter box
1 plastic scoop
Green food coloring
Directions:
1. Prepare cake mixes and bake according to package directions.
2. Prepare pudding mix and chill until ready to assemble.
3. Crumble white sandwich cookies in small batches in blender, they tend to stick, so scrape often.
4. Set aside all but ¼ cup of crumbled cookies.
5. Add a few drops of the food coloring to the ¼ cup of cookies and mix with a fork.
6. When cakes are cooled to room temperature, crumble into a large bowl.
7. Toss with half the remaining white cookie crumbles and the pudding. You probably won't need all of the pudding mix with the cake; feel it, it should be moist but not soggy.
8. Put mixture in NEW litter box.
9. Put three unwrapped tootsie rolls in a microwave-safe dish and heat until soft and pliable.
10. Shape ends so they curve slightly and are no longer blunt. Repeat with three more tootsie rolls and bury in cake/cookie/pudding mixture.
11. Sprinkle the green cookie crumbs over the top of mixture. This is supposed to look like the chlorophyll in kitty litter.
12. Heat remaining tootsie rolls until almost melted. Scrape them on top of the cake and sprinkle with cookie crumbs.
13. Place the box on newspaper and sprinkle a few crumbs around. Serve with a NEW pooper scooper.
