It isn’t often that a cookie has a many-storied background. The Snickerdoodle cookie recipe below creates perfectly wonderful cookies, even though historians can’t seem to agree on the cookie’s roots.
Some say the recipe is a variation of a sugar cookie, with spices added for a headier taste by Germans in the 17th and 18th centuries. Those that are in line with this theory claim that the name is a corruption of the German word Schneckennudel, which means ‘snail dumpling’.
Others swear the cookie was named in honor of the tall tale hero, Snickerdoodle who first appeared in the early 1900s and is known as a well-humored do-gooder. Whatever the true origin may be, it won’t matter once you taste these cinnamon-rich parcels of delectable goodness.
Snickerdoodles are made with butter, oil, sugar, and flour. They are then rolled in cinnamon sugar. Eggs, cream of tartar, and baking soda may be added to leaven the dough. The surface of the cookies is cracked and can be crisp or soft.
Although snickerdoodles are often confused with sugar cookies, the difference is that sugar cookies are rolled in white sugar while snickerdoodles are rolled in a mixture of white sugar and cinnamon.
Snickerdoodles are common in Canada and the United States, but they are lesser known in other parts of the world. Since the Snickerdoodle’s invention, the cookie has grown in popularity as its flavoring is often added to other desserts and drinks. Dunkin Donuts, for example, recently unveiled a Snickerdoodle Cookie Latte while Nestle introduced a Snickerdoodle coffee creamer.
It is also used to flavor candles, perfumes, shampoos, and body washes. That we recommend that you taste-test the various other variants of Snickerdoodle.
