The best meals are the ones that are satisfying and filling. But it’s even better when they’re easy to make and require little prep time. Ham and potato pie has all the best aspects of a casserole. It also has all the comfort food appeal of a pot pie.
This dish is a winner because it only requires two pans and a few simple ingredients. But it tastes so hearty and delicious that it doesn’t seem like a shortcut meal in any way. No one will ever guess just how easily it came together.
Even better, this versatile recipe is equally suited for breakfast, brunch, or a comforting dinner. With eggs, potatoes, ham, and pie crust, this is full of goodness that sticks to your ribs and fills you up. You won’t have anybody leaving the table feeling hungry.
There’s little here that picky eaters won’t like, either. One of the most frustrating things is when you put a lot of effort into a meal and someone says they don't like it. That’s not likely to happen with ham and potato pie.
Ham and potato pie is so hearty because it’s full of protein from both the eggs and the ham. Protein stays with you longer, keeping you satisfied. That means you’re less likely to hear the kids clamoring for snacks an hour after eating. Then again, with growing kids, you never know. Keep some applesauce cups on hand for dessert, just in case.
Ham and Potato Pie
The secret to this recipe’s widespread appeal is in the pie crust. After all, who doesn’t like pie? But pies don’t have to be sweet to be tasty. Chicken pot pie is another good example of a savory pie that makes a delicious dish for dinner. If your family has ever had chicken pot pie and wondered if there was a similar dish you could make, ham and potato pie is a great alternative.
This recipe has one aspect that some families may not be happy about, and that’s the fact that it’s lacking in vegetables. But luckily, that problem is easy to fix. You can add some frozen green peas or mushrooms to the filling and it should go well with the other flavors. Ham and potato pie is versatile and you can change it up however you want.
You might think that you can’t make this recipe if someone in your family is on a gluten-free diet. But fortunately, even that issue can be easily overcome! Many grocery stores sell gluten-free pie crusts that you can use as a substitute instead.
Fortunately, for busy moms on a time crunch, this doesn’t take very long to make. It just tastes as if it did. You’ll be happy that you could prepare a rich, satisfying meal for your family in little more than the time it would take to wait for pizza delivery.
Ham and Mashed Potato Pie
Another way you can change up this versatile recipe is to try making ham and mashed potato pie. In this version, you would mash the potatoes (either with a potato masher or a hand mixer) and add them as a layer over the ham. That would make it more like a layered pie or casserole than using sliced potatoes. If you added the layer of mashed potatoes on top instead of a second pie crust, the potatoes would get crunchy and add some texture.
This recipe also has the advantage of being very budget-friendly. If you have a tight food budget, as many people with growing families do, having affordable meals is a great way to keep your costs under control. In general, recipes that have fewer ingredients are cheaper, as well as being easier to prepare.
A big advantage of this meal is that in addition to being easy to prepare, it will also be relatively easy to clean up. With only two pans, you won’t have to spend hours in the kitchen cleaning up after dinner. That’s a big factor in what many cooks decide to make. Cleaning up the kitchen after dinner is expected after a big holiday meal like Thanksgiving, but it is too much work for every day.
The most important thing is that your family eats a healthy dinner together every night when it’s possible. Memories are made around the dinner table and kids will always remember family dinners with fondness. Even if cooking those meals can sometimes be a bit of a hassle, it’s always worthwhile.
What to Serve With This Recipe
There are plenty of options when it comes to finding something to serve with this recipe. Anything that has pork in it can go with a range of sides. Usually, cooks will jump to potato side dishes, but we don't think they fit very well with this dish considering it already has potatoes in it.
Despite what you might believe, there is such a thing as too much potato! Instead, try serving something like cottage cheese. Choose a low-fat type of cottage cheese to keep the meal a little healthier. Cottage cheese has some great nutrients in it, including protein.
Applesauce is another easy side you can serve with this dinner, and it's sure to be popular with the kids. If you have the time, make your own applesauce in advance. Homemade applesauce is a lot better than store bought, but we also understand that you can't beat the convenience of store bought applesauce.
Finally, you can't go wrong with some cheesy vegetables. Putting cheese on veggies is a great way to get kids to be less indignant about eating them. Since this recipe doesn't have any veggies in it, putting them on the side is a great way to balance the dish.
